Magan is now for sale:After many great years of racing and growing up cruising the New England coast on the old girl, Magan is now for Sale. We have made the decision to move up to a larger boat and we have now come to terms with the need let Magan go after she has served our family so well for so many years. Magan is 1979 Catalina 27 TM version with outboard. Boat is in mint condition and needs nothing. I promise you will not find a Catalina 27 in better condition or as fitted out as this one. Full set of both cruising and racing sails. She is located in Branford, CT and will stay in the water until the end of October if you would like to go for a sail. Great Cruising boat and we have had a lot of fun racing her. Magan has the potential to dominate the MD one design fleet. Asking $10,000.00 and will consider all reasonable offers. You must see the boat to understand why the asking price is more then fair. For serious inquires, please contact me for more information and pictures. Thimble33@sbcglobal.net or 860-434-5993 after 6pm EST. |

Game On!!!!!!Magan is back in the water!!!!! Racing is back on. We made it just in time for the start of the Branford race, literally! We were still tuning the rig 30 minutes before our start. The race went very well as we won our class in a very convincing fashion as well as taking the overall trophy as well. The new sail and faired keel performed well above our expectations! Magan is moving better than she ever has! This should be an exciting season! |

Racing on HOLD for June 2008:We have made the decission to fair the keel using some special templates purchased specifically for our boat and it is proving to be quite a large project. We want to do it right so it's going to take some time. We should have the boat in the water by the end of June. |

What's In Store For 2008?1. We have just purchased a brand new #1 from the boys at Z Sails. After a few measurements and some research we decided against the carbon option and went with a Technora tri radial laminate. We just had to take a step back and realize that we are a Catalina 27, not a Mumm 30! With the exception of an old #3, Magan will have excellent sails for the season.
2. We will be moving the old single speed primaries to up on the cabin house and replace them with two new Lewmar 2 peed self-tailers for our primary winches. Need to work smarter not harder. 3. We have decided against installing the Booth performance rudder this year and instead will be purchasing a custom keel template to fair the keel properly. We want the rudder to be the last option to consider due to the rating hit that we will receive (3-5 seconds a mile). 4. Magan will have adjustable Genoa car leads this year. Yes, I know it is about time! 5. We are going to look into bringing the traveler control lines to the mid section of the boat this year to help keep weight forward and to windward. We will also see if we can bring the mainsheet controls forward as well. It’s been a fun fall, but now it’s hurry up and wait season! Thank god for skiing! We are going to be looking for some steady crew for 2008. No experience need, we will train if you have a strong desire to learn. Stay tuned to our web site and let us know if you are interested. |

2007 Season Wrap UpAfter a hard fought 3rd overall ECSA placing in 2006, Magan came back determined to take it all this year. This year we were hoping to finally get to use our new #2 as our #1 was about to enter it’s last season.
With 4 firsts, a second and a third we were able to take 1st over all for the ATB Beer Can Summer Series for 2007. Taking it to the next level, MAGAN performed equally well in the ECSA circuit races, never placing worse than 3rd except for one race (we were lucky just to finish with winds gusting up 37kts!). With the impressive list of finishes, MAGAN was able to take home the 1st place overall trophy for ECSA Division 7! We missed the great competition we had with Spirit from last year as Jim (Spirits owner) decided not to race her this year. This year we focused our races East of Branford to find better competition. Again, we only were able to secure one first place finish, but we beat all of the boats we raced against that were larger than us this year (wasn’t even close) and considered it an improvement. What we had a hard time with this year were the old salts! The guys who have been sailing for longer than I am old and sailing boats of similar size and vintages to ours. There is never any shame to loosing to a better sailor. We feel we sailed the boat as well as we could with our beat up #1 carrying us for most of the season again. The realization set in that if we could perform this well with old sails (our #1 was made in 1982); imagine what we could do with new ones. No longer are we the sheep in wolves clothing showing up to the starting line. No need to worry about a Catalina 27 in our class. We had used that to our advantage for 2 years, but next season all the boats are what a piece of us and the only way to stay on top is to keep the boat on top of her game. It’s time to invest! We promise to have Magan at the very top of her game of the 2008 season, stay tuned! We would like to thank our crew who helped make this year a successful one for the boat: Elio Betty Bob Johnson Don Berich Steve Stevens Mr. Medbery and his daughter Rachel Stephanie Romanelli for helping us out last minute with the Off Soundings Fall series! See you on the water next season! |

2006 Season Wrap UpThis was the first year that we really began to take the racing seriously (not too serious as that’s not our style). We picked up a great #2 (150%) which we realized we were in desperate need of from last season. The only problem was that we never got the chance to use it. In all the races we entered, the average wind speed was 10kts or less requiring us to call our old #1 which was in surprisingly good shape for her age. The local Wednesday night series took a bit of a back seat this year as we focused our time and effort on the ECSA series racing in 5 of the local regattas (one was canceled to no wind). We would have liked to do more though our schedules didn’t allow for it this season. As they say its quality over quantity and that is how we were able to take the third place overall trophy for Division 8 ECSA. We did find some incredible competition with a very well sailed Tarten 28 known a Sprit. Of the 4 races we sailed against each other, she took two and we took two, (an even split down the middle) though Spirit did go on to a well deserved overall win for our division. We were pleased with our performance, but were bothered at our failed attempt to claim only one 1st place finish for the season. When you’re racing PHRF with a vintage boat like ours, it’s tough to find close competition with boats of similar ratings. We find ourselves usually racing against bigger and faster boats at times and you really can’t complain too much when you get beat by a C&C 99 or a J30. We knew it was time to go back to the drawing board and go for it all in 2007.

2005 Season Wrap UpMagan officially comes out of retirement. With the purchase of a new main, and a few racing modifications, we decide to hit the local Wednesday night series for both the summer and the fall series. Both my father and I were racing on other boats for the ECSA series, but we had a blast with the old girl on Wednesday nights and realized that she still had it in her. We were surprised that we were able to place in every race, even with her old sails made back in 1982. Honestly, they don’t make sails like that anymore. We also did well in the 2 ECSA regattas we sailed in and the decision was made to work on the boat a bit more over the winter and take on the Division 8 ECSA circuit for 2006. Special thanks to Elio Betty who was able to race with us for the first time this year.
